1. INTRODUCTION

The trilogy The Truth About Mary: A Scriptural Introduction to the Mother of Jesus for Bible-Believing Christians sets out to show that the doctrines of Mary's Immaculate Conception, Perpetual Virginity, Divine Maternity, Assumption and Maternal Mediation are inescapably rooted in Scripture. Volume One is Starting Points in Discerning Biblical Truth, Volume Two is Mary in Scripture and the Historic Christian Faith and Volume Three is A Response to Fundamentalist Misconceptions and a Return to Historic Christianity. This booklet is a summary of the trilogy that, we hope, will stimulate the reader's interest in the trilogy itself and in the numerous works cited therein.

From Genesis to Revelation, from Bethlehem to Cana to Calvary, the most powerful procession of images in Scripture is the dazzling vision of the Woman and her Seed, the Virgin and her Son, the Queen-Mother and the King, the Daughter of Zion and the messianic Son of Man, the New Adam and the New Eve. This striking sequence of scriptural icons locked itself into the minds and hearts of the Christian faithful, starting with the Apostolic Community of the first century, the first Fathers and the earliest

2. MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT MARY

There is no battle between Scripture and Marian doctrine. The battle is between competing interpretations of Scripture as it relates to Mary. On the one side we have the 20th century Protestant Fundamentalists who have dispensed with many essential elements of the historic Christian Faith and who have themselves split into over twenty thousand sects that differ on fundamental interpretations of Scripture on various issues. On the other side we have the consistent interpretation of Scripture held for 20 centuries from the time of the New Testament Church. This interpretation, the early Church Fathers taught, was the interpretation of the divinely inspired New Testament writers themselves and this was the

3. STARTING POINTS: THE TRUTHS TAUGHT BY SCRIPTURE

Neither the basis of Marian doctrine nor the Fundamentalist critique of Marian doctrine can be understood without a review of the starting points adopted by those who affirm Marian doctrine and devotion and those who deny it. On the side of affirmation we have the historic Christian Faith and on the side of denial we have Protestant fundamentalism. Fundamentalism, it must be said, represents a break from the historic Christian Faith that in turn led to various "human traditions", rejections of the doctrine of the Trinity (and other basic doctrines), Liberalism, the cults and over 25,000 denominations.

4. THE BIBLICAL PORTRAIT OF MARY

The biblical portrait of Mary begins with the prophecy of the salvific mission of the Woman and her Seed in the book of Genesis and ends with the stunning vignette of the triumphant Woman Clothed with the Sun in the book of Revelation.

Introduction: Mary and Scripture

The truth about Mary and her role in salvation can come only from a full understanding of Scripture and the portrayal of Mary in Scripture. This full understanding comes from careful study of the two covenants between God and His people, the Old and the New. Mary is the bridge between the Old and the New Covenants. The two covenants are basic to the

5. THE NEW TESTAMENT CHURCH ON MARY

The stupendous witness of Scripture to Mary and her role in the scheme of salvation was echoed and amplified by the New Testament Church. As the first Christians preached and lived the Gospel it became clear that to understand and present the Christian message they had to formulate what they believed into clearcut doctrines. Right from the beginning it was taken for granted that such formulation of doctrine would involve not just Jesus but also Mary. In the ancient debates over doctrine the affirmation of
